MY STORY
I'm Riley, a senior at the University of Northern Iowa from Fontanelle, Iowa! When I'm not crocheting and creating, I'm working on my English major and creative writing minor (as you can probably tell by my lengthy paragraphs and explanations). My faith is a huge aspect of my life, and my goal over everything else is to pursue what God has planned for me and spread His love. I'm so thankful you're here! Welcome to Smiles with Riles!
The History
I first learned to crochet when I was in elementary school at a crochet club in the library. I've been crocheting ever since, but it wasn't until the end of my community college journey that I decided to begin selling my creations. I discovered during that time that although I loved crocheting, I could only crochet so much for myself before I started running out of space to keep everything. I also discovered there actually was a market for crocheted items, and although I wasn't sure if people would be interested in anything I had to sell, I made a Facebook and Instagram page and started posting products. The responses I received were wonderful, but it wasn't until setting up a booth at the Adair County Fair that summer that I realized how many people loved my cutesy crochet projects as much as me. Since then, I've grown a lot in my crocheting skills and have been able to connect to so many lovely people. I'm so proud of how far I've come and I can't wait to see where I can go next!
The Purpose
I am incredibly passionate about the importance and value of items made by hand in today's economy, and I want Smiles with Riles to be a place where I can offer those items to others. Though I want to respect myself and my time in regards to prices, my goal with this business is not just to get rich quick. I want to spread as much joy as I possibly can with my items and continue changing the narrative of what crocheting is and what it can be. Crocheting is really cool, and I hope my younger self learning to crochet in the library is proud of all I've been able to accomplish now.
The Logistics
Because I'm just one person, Smiles with Riles operates on a pretty small scale. You can find me at several craft fairs and farmers' markets throughout the year, but the best way to buy is a product from me is to simply reach out and let me know what you'd like. One of the main purposes of this website is to show you what items I've made in the past and what items I currently have in stock so you can have an easier time deciding what you'd like! But since my business is so local and my schedule can vary so much with college, it's easier for me to not offer sales directly through this website. However, if you would like to make a purchase, all you have to do is send me a message!
